Is Creator-Led Production The Answer to Sustaining and Growing TGL's Audience?

The way sports content is created and consumed is evolving. Traditional live broadcasts follow a structured, high-production model, while creator-led content thrives on authenticity, engagement, and platform-first storytelling.

The big question for TGL: Can creator-led production help sustain and grow its audience when it doesn’t have Rory or Tiger playing?

It’s been a few weeks since TGL launched, and we’ve intentionally held back. Disruptive Play isn’t about chasing headlines—we focus on the deeper shifts in sports, media, and the creator economy. (For those needing a primer on TGL, plenty of perspectives exist HERE, HERE, HERE)

Today, we’re analyzing two distinct production approaches—TGL Live on ESPN vs. The First Ever TGL YouTube Golf Match by Good Good—to see what lessons can be learned from the creator-led model.

The Tale of Two Tapes: TGL Live vs. Good Good's YouTube Match

What is TGL?

TGL is a tech-driven, team-based golf competition created by TMRW Sports, co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. It merges simulator golf with real-world gameplay inside a high-tech arena, aiming to modernize the sport for new audiences.

What is Good Good Golf?

Good Good Golf is a creator-led collective redefining golf content through high-energy, digital-first storytelling. Founded by influencers like Garrett Clark, Micah Morris, and Grant Horvat, Good Good thrives on engaging, relatable content that resonates with younger audiences. They’ve built a brand that extends beyond content into merchandise and partnerships, proving that creator-led production can rival traditional sports media.

The Numbers So Far

TGL Live (2 hours 10 minutes, ESPN Broadcast)

  • Week 1: 919,000 viewers

  • Week 2: Over 1 million (Tiger Woods debut)

  • Week 3: Sharp drop to 682,000 viewers (no Tiger or Rory)

  • Week 4: Rebound to 864,000 (Tiger Woods vs. Rory McIlroy matchup)

Good Good’s YouTube Match

  • 1 hour run time - 1.1 million views and counting

Tale of the Tape: Let’s Dissect The Production

Courtesy of Dennis Lisberger, Founder of No Red Tape Media, a boutique, social-first content and production company leveraging the creator-led production model through experience working with creators like Dude Perfect, Brodie Smith, F2 Freestylers, Brandon Perna, MMG, Jack Settleman, and Scooter Magruder. Highly relevant, NRT is actively working on People League Golf, collaborating with top golf creators like Luke Kwon, Alexa Melton, Martin Borgmeir, Tooms Golf, Jenna Bandy, and Pointer Bros.
